Ferndale Public School:

Ferndale School opened in September 1954 with eight classrooms and 11 staff members.  Originally planned to be a six room school, the Grantham Board decided to add two additional rooms before the foundation was completed.

Late in 1954, a six room addition to the school was planned.  At this time, Ferndale welcomed a Kindergarten class and opening registrations proved this to be a necessity for this growing community.  A new lawn, shrubs, parking lot and hardtop surface were also added.

In 1961, Ferndale joined with 35 other school to make up the elementary school system of the St. Catharines Board of Education when the amalgamation of the four areas of St. Catharines, Merritton, Grantham and Port Dalhousie took place.

With continued growth taking place in this area, a third addition of 10 classrooms, a staff room, seminar room, Learning Resource Centre, and a general purpose room was built in 1968.

In April of 2004 , Ferndale celebrated it’s 50th anniversary with hundreds of former students, their families, and staff.  In October, a new primary playground was installed in partnership with Kaboom and Home Depot.

Today Ferndale is home to about 410 students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 with 37 staff members.  Students from Applewood join us for grades 7 and 8 and our students transition to either Sir Winston Churchill or St. Catharines Collegiate as they move on to secondary school.
