Crossroads Public School:

About Crossroads Public School

Crossroads Public School was built and opened in 2011 by the District School Board of Niagara to accommodate the children of Col. John Butler and Virgil Public Schools.  These aging facilities were deemed prohibitive to repair, and a new property was purchased for a state-of-the-art facilitiy to house the combined population.

This two storey, fully accessible facility includes 22 bright and spacious classrooms, a large double gymasium, elevator, and a state-of-the-art Learning Commons (Library/Computer Lab), all on a beautiful 8 acre property. We have a population of 430 Kindergarten to grade 8 children.

When Crossroads Public School opened its doors to students in September 2011, it simultaneously launched a new era of environmentally-sustainable school building technologies in Niagara. Thanks to a substantial Renewable Energy Funding Grant of $962,496 from the Ministry of Education, the school’s roof is home to 338 photovoltaic crystalline solar panels that generate approximately 25% of the school’s power needs.

Crossroads is also a Full Day Kindergarten Program site with three active full day, every day programs run by qualified Teachers and Early Childhood Educators working in partnership. Research has proven that children who participate in full-day kindergarten get a solid foundation for future learning and demonstrate substantially improved reading, writing and math skills.

We are pleased to be the English Language Learner Site for Niagara-on-the-Lake, and offer a supportive environment for children new to the English Language from Kindergarten to Grade 8.

Staff and students of Crossroads are excited to be a GOLD level Ontario Eco School and we continue focus on waste reduction, energy conservation, school ground greening and environmental education in classrooms, school-wide and extra curricular activities.  We are also excited to be planning for an "Outdoor Classroom" that should be ready for use in the late spring of 2013.

We have also joined with Niagara Nutrition Partners to offer a Healthy Snack Program at our school.  Daily delicious and nutritious snacks are served to our students free of charge!  Details about how you can become involved in this program as a donor and/or volunteer are available by calling 905-468-7793 and asking for our Vice Principal.

With a new school, comes change.  However, the strong community feeling, high standards for student achievement and excellence in education will remained the same. Our staff are excited about the wonderful educational opportunities we offer in our new facility.
